Well, in 1986, after several years of refurbishing and selling used golf carts out of his garage, Bo Huff opened a retail dealer called The Golf Car Center in Columbia, SC. It was one of the first stand-alone retailers in the country that bought and sold used golf cars. About a year later, The Golf Car Center became an official E-Z-GO dealer. Soon the dealer became known as the “Home of the Hunting Car.” It specialized in outfitting electric vehicles to suit customer’s preferences and purposes.
Then in 2000 Ruff & Tuff Products was formed and began selling a full line of aftermarket accessories to individuals and dealers for vehicles made by all the major brands.
By 2005, five years of design, engineering and testing resulted in Ruff & Tuff introducing its first line of electric vehicles under its own brand. And, in 2006, Ruff & Tuff expanded its dealer network through an agreement with Baton Rouge, LA based GTG. That November, Ruff & Tuff introduced an expanded line of vehicles for 2007 that included product enhancements such as independent front suspension and new technologies such as AGM dry cell Green Power batteries and an advanced on-board charger.
In 2008, Ruff & Tuff began operating under the name, Ruff & Tuff Electric Vehicles. By that same February, R&T launched its first four-wheel drive vehicle, the Hunter 4x4, at the Shot Show in Las Vegas. This vehicle was the first “true” electric 4x4 hunting vehicle ever marketed to the public. Among its many features, the Hunter 4x4 boasts front and rear independent suspension, on-the-fly four-wheel drive, and four wheel hydraulic disc brakes.
As of 2009, R&T has expanded its line of vehicles to six, all of which are street legal and certified Low Speed Vehicles. Currently, the company is headquartered in Winnsboro, South Carolina.
